A Rider's guide to KEYWIN CRM Track Adapters

In recent Olympics and World Championships we have seen riders pull their feet during track racing. This is both embarrassing and potentially dangerous to the rider concerned and the other riders on the track at the time.

The Keywin Track Adapter is intended to minimize these risks whilst still retaining the ease, performance and convenience of Keywin clipless pedals for track riders.

Please note: we do not give an absolute guarantee that you cannot pull your foot when using the track adapters, but that the risks are greatly reduced. (See important notes at the bottom of the web page)

The adapter pin is operated by an over centre lever which can be easily engaged or disengaged by the rider. The adapter pin can be set in the engaged position before the rider clips into the pedal.
The pedal will engage in the normal way. The pin will depress to enable engagement and spring back into place effectively locking the pedal. The lever must be operated to enable release.

Increase your Cornering Angles

Keywin CRM pedals offer extremely good cornering angles and even when contact with the riding surface is made, the plastic construction offers a soft touch down. This reduces the risk of one of the hazards of track riding - hitting the up-slope pedal.

Cornering angles can be improved further by specifying one of the narrower axle lengths offered by Keywin. These will bring in the pedal width by 3mm or 6mm

The pedal can be used as a normal CRM pedal with the pin in the lowered position. However we strongly recommend the track adapter is removed completely before the pedals are used on public roads.

When the track adapters are factory fitted, the fixed pedal inserts are also fitted to lock out the radial movement. This is done to meet the majority of riders' references but the adapters can be used with either fixed or floating pedals.

Special Notes:

1. Keywin pedals have always been the choice for track riders and many thousands of races have been won by riders on the standard pedals - sprints, points races, criteriums, kilos etc. etc.

Kilo riders (and riders in similar events) put huge strains on their pedals and feel they need more security than can possibly be offered by any pedal designed to clip out with reasonable ease in road situations. Double toe straps used to be the norm, and some riders actually screwed pedals to their shoes. Both these options have obvious disadvantages - discomfort, inconvenience, weight, wind resistance.

To gain the additional security required, a Keywin rider modified his pedal to prevent unintentional sideways movement by inserting a sprung pin in much the same way as the Keywin Track Adapter. Keywin took the basic idea and turned it into a convenient, lightweight, safe and comfortable option.

Even then, some riders have doubts about the shoes being sufficiently strong or want an even greater sense of security. These people use an additional toe strap around the pedal and shoe positioned so that the strap comes under the sprung bar at the back of the pedal. This adds two factors - first it gives support to the shoe, and second, it holds the sprung bar of the pedal snug against the shoe plate increasing attachment strength.

2. Shoe plates on Keywin CRM pedals are very tolerant of wear and will continue operating satisfactorily even when the two wear lips are almost worn away. However, when used in conjunction with the Track Adaptors, the tolerance for wear is reduced and riders should ensure they walk very little on the shoe plates and if even moderate wear occurs the shoe plates should be changed.

3. The position of the roll pin locating the over centre lever should be checked regularly - certainly every meeting. The pin must sit evenly and flush with the sides of the over centre lever.
