Bob Jackson Touring Frames

Bob Jackson offers a frameset designed with the serious bicycle tourist in mind. This frame is designed from the ground up as a no compromise, light weight touring frameset, which will handle anything from one day trips to fully loaded cross country jaunts.

The heart of the frame is Reynolds 531 ST  double butted tubing. This tube set is specifically designed with the construction of touring frames in mind, and along with its legendary strength, it incorporate several distinct changes from its more widely known 531C cousin. Among these changes are the increase in wall thickness of the top, seat and down tubes. The fork blades also feature an increase in gauge, as do the seat and chainstays. All these alterations to the tube set are engineered to increase the stability of a fully loaded touring cycle.

Aside from using the correct materials in the fabrication stage, special notice must be paid to the proper geometry of the frameset if it is to perform as expected. Again, being a no compromise entity, allows Bob Jackson to incorporate these desirable and necessary features into the design and construction of these frames.

The rake of the fork has been increased from 40 mm (standard on Jackson road frames) to 50 mm, allowing both more shock absorbing qualities and more directional stability to come into play. Also in the interest of comfort and stability the chainstays have received an increase in length from 40.6 cm (again standard on a road frame) to 44 cm. Another advantage of increasing chainstay length is the reduction of chain deflection experienced when using a triple crank along with the increased heel clearance afforded when rear panniers are used. Combine these features with a more laid back head tube angle of 72 degrees (73.5 - 74 degrees being standard on a road frame) and the result is an extremely comfortable and stable touring cycle. A short wheelbase might be a sought after goal in the construction of a road racing frame, but is most definitely not desired feature of a touring cycle. Stability and comfort should be higher up the ladder of priorities than lightning quick handling. Also in the interest of stability the bottom bracket height is lower than found on a road racing frame.

Naturally,  being a true touring frame, provisions are made for full panniers and clearance is allowed for fenders and larger section tires.

The Special Tourist and Super Tourist models differ in that cantilever brake bosses are standard on the SPECIAL TOURIST model, otherwise both frames are identical. As with all Bob Jackson cycles, size color and geometry may be altered to suit the individuals cycling requirements. There is no additional charge for these choices or modifications. Correct spacing for your choice of drive chain will be incorporated during fabrication. Frames can be built with rear spacing as large as 145mm (allowing an incredibly strong rear wheel to be built with virtually no dish). These are just some of the choices you have with a Bob Jackson frame that are not available with a stock frameset. Additional braze ons can be incorporated (generator mounting bosses, rear disk brake mounts etc.) during construction.

Please keep in mind, Bob Jackson, unlike other manufacturers, does not throw a "TOURING" sticker on a multi purpose frame and try to palm it off as a serious touring machine. All Bob Jackson framesets are hand built and finished   in the Jackson factory in Great Britain, no outside work (except chrome plating) is ever performed on a Bob Jackson frame. If you are considering a serious touring frameset, pound for pound and dollar for dollar there is no finer frameset available.

Should your special requirement dictate, touring frames can also be built with a wide variety of tubing.
